Friday Art Party 1: Skateboards and Politics

San Francisco Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi hosted his monthly art opening on Friday...

...this time devoted to hand-painted skateboards from a Western Addition group for 9-13 year olds called the San Francisco Skate Club (click here for their website).

The group has summer camps where they teach skateboarding to the inexperienced and take field trips to suburban skate parks...

...since San Francisco, with its $7 billion municipal budget, somehow can't find the resources to build a downtown skate park of their own.

Maybe that has something to do with the millions being dumped annually into the money pit that is Harding Park Golf Course in Supervisor Sean Elsbernd's district (above).

Various political clowns, such as h. brown and Kenny (above) were holding court at the party...

...and the very drunk h. brown was even using the occasion to have various politicos interviewed in Mirkarimi's office by Hope Johnson for his new daily internet video show.

After a brief pit stop, I collected my friend Kimo Crossman (above) and we headed off to other neighborhood art openings.

Our neighborhood group (North Mission) has been trying for years to get a skateboard park built around Otis and Duboce. Instead we find out - after the fact - that the land has been sold to another developer to build condos. The space is right under (or almost) the freeway underpass; you'd think that the location would deter anybody from buying the darn things when they are finished. But then, we still don't have the new street lights, greenery, and other urban amenities that we were promised when the new freeway went in. Such is the fate of those who live on the "wrong" side of Market St.
